According to the Government of Canada, Express Entry invitations are issued in rounds throughout the year. Candidates are selected from the pool based on their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores, and only the highest-ranking profiles receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.

Types of Rounds of Invitations

The Government of Canada holds different types of rounds to meet ongoing immigration needs and economic goals.

1. General Rounds of Invitations

In general rounds, the highest-ranking candidates who are eligible for any of the three Express Entry programs are invited:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

These rounds typically include the largest number of invitations.

2. Program-Specific Rounds of Invitations

Sometimes a round targets only one specific program.
For example, if a round is held specifically for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), only candidates who qualify for the PNP will receive an invitation.

Program-specific rounds help provinces and territories meet labour market demands.

3. Category-Based Rounds of Invitations

The Minister may establish categories to help address key economic priorities. These rounds invite candidates who meet the criteria for that specific category.

Categories may include:

  • Healthcare occupations
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
  • Trade ocupations
  • Agriculture and agri-food
  • Education occupation
  • French-language proficiency
  • Physicians with Canadian work experience

Candidates must still qualify under one of the three main Express Entry programs before being placed in the pool.

Candidates with a Provincial or Territorial Nomination

Candidates who receive a provincial or territorial nomination continue to be invited through:

  • General rounds
  • PNP-specific rounds

A nomination gives an additional 600 CRS points, greatly improving a candidate’s chances of receiving an invitation.
